In the mid 1990s, when the internet was young, I was the lead designer working with Tile Fantastic in San Jose, CA to develop their first website. By 2008 their original website had survived longer than most first generation sites ever dreamed. Realizing it was time for an update I was again asked to help them out. The goal was to create a more contemporary look and feel. We knew that a popular feature over the years was the “Materials” section, followed by the “Gallery” of example installations. These would stay the focal points. The updated website design was functional and reflected the Tile Fantastic brand.
Web site design is always evolving. In 2011 I sat down with Tile Fantastic to evaluate the website. It was realized that they could not afford to ignore the site regardless if it still looked contemporary and was functional. Question was, “Could it be more functional?” I explained that the areas of interest for visitors had still remained the same. Given this information I suggested marketing the manufacturers and their product lines. A site should not just be an online library of information. Websites today needs to work harder. We needed to promote the identified value propositions that set Tile Fantastic apart from the competition. It is their expertise and their distinct products from top manufacturers that make Tile Fantastic one of the best. Some of these products are exclusive, only available regionally at Tile Fantastic. At the same time integrating social media efforts was also a import aspect of the redesign.
